Kit chat

So here is where I put anything kit-related. Obviously these are my own opinions and if I ever get paid for them I will make that clear. That's pretty unlikely, but you never know.....

Because I'm a bit of a food bore - I've created a section all about food and cooking - here

3 off-list kit hacks

There's no shortage of advice on what bike to buy, stove to fire up or GPS to use on the internet. But here are 3 items that I've found really useful, but are rarely mentioned: crocs, poo shovel and bungees.

Hammock & tarp pitching

I thought it might be useful to show how I put up my hammock and tarp in somewhat controlled conditions so that I could take my time and explain things logically.

The hammock was from Decathlon - Bushcraft durable 1-person hammock - Furtiv camouflage. So far I've been pretty pleased with it. The pitching process is simple; it includes a mini-hammock as it were to hold your gear off the ground and loops to hold a standard sized sleeping mat diagonally. That last point is quite important when it's colder. The material is super thin polyester - which has almost no insulating qualities. Throw in a useful stuff sack to fold it into and that's a lot of kit for less than £45. Really not wild about the camo though....I mean Furtiv just sounds well dodgy.

The tarp is from DD Hammocks - 3m x 3m in Coyote Brown. There are lighter options like the Rig 7 from Alpkit, but this seemed like a pretty affordable option.

I can't remember where the ridge line came from, but I have about 9.6m of it in length.

The prusik loop I've had for years - but if you're not acquainted with it here's a useful link https://www.animatedknots.com/prusik-knot

And finally, you'll need to be pretty slick with the Evenk hitch. So here's a link to what I found to be the simplest explanation https://youtu.be/RE5PgvbWUsw?si=s6f0yl4Tn0VGc4X2
